SCHOOL VISITS & WILD LIFE
Introduction
Chigborough is situated just 150 meters from the shore of the upper parts of the Blackwater Estuary

The farm a horticultural holding post war consisted of a sandy loam soil overlaying gravel which was capable of
Supporting a wide range of crops. Gravel extraction took place in the early seventies and following mining the
Resultant restored land is of lower agricultural value although a small area of virgin land still exists
The site supports an increasing variety of flora and fauna which has colonised the area as it has matured. The
Fishery is a managed landscape - trees have been planted and grassy banks are mown to allow access to the
numerous lakes, other areas have been allowed to regenerate naturally
The lakes are largely shallow in nature and show various degrees of eutrophication but generally support
A diverse variety of invertebrate life as part of the food chain. The waters are stocked with both Trout and
coarse fish the latter breed readily
Chigboro Farm and Fisheries are now part of the Countryside Stewardship Scheme. This initiative
Funded by DEFRA and among other things opens up areas of the countryside to schools for educational
Access - as an educational facility the site id FREE
The fishery has a lodge for wet weather teaching, Snack lunches can be provided by arrangement
(catering staff hold food hygiene certification)
Use of the lodge and catering would incur a nominal charge
We have retired senior and junior teachers on our staff who will be able to assist if required
We have produced guidance notes for teachers as to how chigboro may be beneficial in teaching the National Curriculum
